About

The DAFTA awards (DAFTAS) draw their inspiration from quintessential British humour, with the aim to support filmmakers and actors on their creative path.

The DAFTAS was founded by London-based publisher and journalist Tamara Orlova, as a tribute to her late partner Joe Alvarez. Joe’s unmistakable sense of humour lit up London and the international showbiz community for over two decades, before succumbing to cancer in October 2019.

The 2020 awards have attracted those eager to experiment but also those wanting to lend their expertise to other ambitious and vision-driven industry professionals.

Above all, The DAFTAS is for filmmakers who love the challenge and enjoy having fun during the process. Our awards are a melting pot where aspiring and established filmmakers meet, share ideas, and create.

DIVERSITY

OF IDEAS

In times when the word ‘Diversity’ is seemingly running the agenda, we are all for the diversity of opinions, backgrounds, class, ideas.

While performing arts are, historically, a domain of middle and upper-middle classes, we are encouraging talent across all cultural, class, and ethnic backgrounds to put their differences aside and embark on a journey of filmmaking.

At The DAFTAS, we don’t discriminate against anyone based on their sexual orientation, skin colour, religious beliefs, or political views. We strive to attract creators from all underrepresented groups by attracting judges and speakers from diverse backgrounds.
